Price Skimming

High entry price strategy, gradually reduced as the market matures

Price skimming is a strategy where a new product is launched at a high price targeting early adopters willing to pay a premium, then the price is gradually lowered to reach a broader market.

Examples

  • Apple iPhone — high launch price, reduction after one year
  • Gaming consoles — PS5/Xbox more expensive at launch
  • Drugs after patent expiry — cheaper generics enter
